Campaign Diaries 00 - Jade Crows Rising

This is the beginning of the campaign diaries for my game, following the exploits of a group of young samurai from the Kusanagi Clan, vassals of the Matsu branch of the Yamagata Province, the Matsudaira Clan. In this post, I’ll just introduce the background of the campaign, being the third in a series of interconnected games our group played over almost 20 years, and the PCs.

Be aware, our Rokugan severely departs from canon. The Clan Wars, Scorpion Clan Coup and Hida Kisada’s rebellion all happened roughly at the same time and ended with Bayushi Shoju on the imperial throne, becoming the first emperor of a new dynasty that rules for the last 30 years.

BACKGROUND

The Yamagata province is a mountainous region that used to be ruled by the Matsunaga Clan, until 30 years ago when the daimyo Matsunaga Hisahide decided to betray the Lion and join Hida Kisada in his attempt to take the Imperial Throne. Kisada was defeated by the heroic Seven Tigers of Darkness (Yami no Nana Tora) martial brotherhood, but not before he passed by Yamagata, leaving a path of blood and demonic creatures behind.

Hisahide was then defeated by Matsudaira Shingen and her armies, who received the province as reward for her actions. After ten years hunting down Hisahide loyalists and punishing traitors, the Matsudaira Clan finally managed to pacify the majority of Yamagata. The forests and mountains to the north, though, remained lost to the darkness.

Ten years ago, after Yamagata finally started seeing prosperity and peace, a plague hit the province hard. Families were decimated and an imperial mission had to be sent, in an attempt to prevent the disease from spreading outside the province and cure it. Several samurai died, but the plague was stopped.

Finally, in the present, a new catastrophe struck: when returning from a diplomatic mission in Crane lands, the daimyo Matsudaira Iwa and her delegation were viciously attacked by a musket-wielding army of bandits at Kagoro Pass. She died, alongside several other prodigious and promising samurai, rupturing the legacy of several clans in the province. Lady Matsudaira Shingen, now 70-years old, had to return from retirement to rule the clan, since her daughter only left a young child as heir. And, of course, being a true heir of the Matsu, Lady Shingen’s son Harukata would not be considered to lead…

THE PLAYER CHARACTERS

These are the PCs for this game:

Hirata Satsu, Kakita Bushi, 16 years old: Eldest daughter and heir to the Hirata family, her legacy was robbed by her uncle, Munenori, in a bloody civil war that dethroned her father, Isshin. Satsu and her family managed to escape with two of the greatest treasures of the Hirata: the magnificent sword Masayoshi (Justice) and the recipe for the famous Hirata sake.

Adv./Disadvantages: Dangerous Beauty, Sacred Weapon, Prodigy, Haunted, Lost Love.

Kikuichi Asai, Forest Killer Rōnin, 18 years old: Asai was the daughter of a small family, the Kikuichi, that was massacred by the Forest Killers when she was young. Taken by the cruel band of criminals, she was trained as a killing machine and lived a hard life until she managed to escape their grasp. She lived on the road for months until the remnants of the Hirata family hired her as bodyguard during their travel to the Yamagata province…

Adv./Disadvantages: Daredevil, Blood of Osano-wo, Strength of the Earth, Absolute Direction, Can't Lie, Social Disadvantage (Rōnin), Idealistic.

Osumi Yurine, Doji Courtier, 16 years old: Heir to the Osumi family, who came to Yamagata ten years ago with the imperial mission to treat the deadly disease reaping the life of the population and samurai alike. Yurine is not only a skillful courtier, but an incredibly talented doctor as well, following close in the footsteps of her mother.

Adv./Disadvantages: Allies (2/2), Clear Thinker, Darling of the Court (Ando), Dangerous Beauty, Inheritance, Languages, Read Lips, Well-Connected, Dark Secret.

Utsuro Sasayaku, Shosuro Infiltrator, 16 years old: The Utsuro family used to be famously skilled archers, until a cocky ancestor failed a shot and allowed his lord to be killed by the enemy. Punished for his failure with loss of status, the Utsuro took to the shadows, becoming shinobi that posed as mere servants to better follow their charges. Sasayaku was trained from his birth to become the shadowed hand of Kusanagi Kazunori, third child of the Kusanagi clan.

Adv./Disadvantages: Bland, Irreproachable, Shadowed Heart, Read Lips, Wary, Precise Memory, Silent, Spy Network, Obligation.

Isshiki Harumasa, Isawa Shugenja, 16 years old: A peasant child who displayed the talent to commune with the elemental kami, Harumasa was adopted by the eccentric Isshiki family, who served as onmyō-ji for the Kusanagi. Their patriarch, Isshiki Tenkai, is an old shugenja who spends most of his time on the wild regions of Yamagata, communing with the spirits and appeasing the yokai of the region… or so he says.

Adv./Disadvantages: Friendly Kami (Fire), Social Disadvantage (Adopted Peasant).

They all became personal companions of Kusanagi Kazunori, the third child of the Kusanagi clan. There are a few NPCs that grew up with them and became part of the same generation of new samurai of the Kusanagi Clan, forming the Hisui no Karasu (Jade Crows) martial brotherhood.
